ATAG Boilers

Geosolar specifies high quality ATAG condensing boilers on almost all quotations. While the initial cost is higher than a standard boiler, we believe our discerning customers are willing to pay that little extra for a quality built appliance. Importantly, all boilers are capable of weather compensation and low modulation for increased running efficiency. We also recommend Santon unvented cylinders when customers request high pressure power showers.

Atag are a Dutch company who make very high quality condensing boilers. Atag boilers are specified in the UK by local councils for schools and social housing where quality and reliability are critical. We installed our first Atag boiler in 1997 and it has since clocked up over 60,000 hours of runtime and saved the owner thousands of pounds of gas usage.

Boiler Features

Compare these features with other boilers you may be looking at;

  1. Very high build quality. 5 year parts, 2 year labour warranty. 10 year warranty on main heat exchanger against corrosion (when installed by ATAG approved installer). The heat exchanger.
  2. Low modulation. Boilers modulate up from as little as 4.4 kw which means reduced boiler cycling and reduced component wear and tear.
  3. Intelligent boiler controls. The advanced controller always attempts to maintain condensing operation for maximum efficiency. The boiler always starts off at a low power output and ramps up to meet the heating demand. The contrasts with most boilers which fire at full throttle then have to slam on the brakes to reduce the flow temperature.
  4. Ability to interface the BrainQ controller with both the Q and E boilers. The BrainQ unit gives an unprecedented level of control and information on the running operation of the boiler.
  5. Fully coverable under the British Gas Homecare contract after the expiry of the 2 year guarantee.
  6. Solar combi boiler compatible. All the Atag combination boilers will take pre-heated water to the plate heat exchanger. This allows seamless future proofing for a solar system. Not many boilers on the market will accept pre-heated water!
  7. Very quiet running operation. All our customers have comment how quiet the Atag boilers are in operation.
  8. Flexible fluing systems. The 80mm flue means it is possible to locate the boiler in positions that would otherwise not meet regulations. Roof flue, apex flue, high level flue, conservatory flue Also a plume management kit is available pm1 and pm2
  9. Easy maintenance. Some boilers have all the components shoe-horned into a tiny box. While this may mean it goes into a small location, it can make future repairs very difficult and time consuming. All Atag boilers have slightly oversized casings to greatly improve access and therefore reduce the time an engineer is on-site.
  10. Automatic air venting and safety controls. The Atag boiler will automatically shutdown if the system pressure drops below a set point. This is to prevent damage to the boiler. When the system is refilled the boiler will go through a 17 minute startup routine to ensure all the air is safely vented. During this period the burner does not fire, again to prevent damage to the boiler.
  11. Atag for life scheme. Paying a low monthly fee guarantees all parts and labour on the boiler for an amazing 15 years.

Q boiler or E boiler?

What are the differences between the Atag Q and the Atag E boiler?

  1. Price. The Q is about 35% more expensive than the E.
  2. Styling. The Q has an elegant metal casing which removes to reveal a clear polycarbonate inner case. The Ehas a simple, no frills white case.
  3. Pump. The Q has a fully modulating pump which automatically adjusts to the system pressure. The E has a fixed speed pump.
  4. Controls. The Q has additional electrical connections for add-ons such as an external pump. The E does not have this capability. The Q is more appropriate for multi-zone systems.
  5. Cascading. The Q boilers can be cascaded to run in parallel. This is particularly useful for larger properties were a single large boiler is not cost effective or does not provide backup in case of boiler failure.
  6. Zone valve. The Q has a built-in 3 port honeywell divertor valve (W-plan). This simplifies the plumbing as no external valves are required.
  7. Remote controlling. A future development is to allow control of the boiler over the internet. This feature will likely be only available as a modular addon for the Q.
  8. Combi differences. The Combi E has a traditional plate heat exchanger to create hot water. The Combi Q has a small unvented cylinder built in to provide a preheated store of hot water.

Background to Condensing Boilers

When considering a boiler, it is important to remember that the price tag will reflect the build quality and components. A £600 boiler will not be built to the same standard as one costing £1800.

  1. Cheap, low end boilers. With an aluminium heat exchanger. Sorry, but Geosolar does not supply or install this type. You would expect to replace this type of boiler every 5 years.
  2. Budget condensing boilers. With stainless steel heat exchanger. For example Glowworm or Vaillant.
  3. Mid Range condensing boilers. With stainless steel heat exchanger (5 year warranty)
  4. Top of the Range condensing boilers. With stainless steel heat exchanger (10 year warranty). Typically with all add-on features such as weather compensation and low modulation ranges.

We always recommend you install the boiler that will give the longest lifespan and greatest efficiency. All boilers installed by Geosolar are SEDBUK A rated. Weather compensation increases the running efficiency by around 10-15%
